Dominic was diagnosed with Autism at an early age. After experiencing behaviours that challenged, his family decided to find a support living accommodation for him. His experience there was challenging, so when our Unique Community Services team started supporting Dominic, they were instantly dedicated to help him rebuild his life skills, tolerance and communication with others. Now, Dominic has a good understanding of other people’s emotions and enjoys going out daily. He even started cooking and cleaning and enjoys playing video games with his carers.

Reflecting on the Past – The Story

At an early age, Dominic was diagnosed with Autism. He lived in his family home with his loving family – his mum, stepdad and his younger brother, until he was 18. When he turned 18, he started experiencing behaviours that challenged and expressed himself in a way that was uncommon towards his family members. This was when his family decided it would be the best thing for Dominic to move into a support living accommodation.

Facing the Challenges

While residing in the supported living accommodation, Dominic had a difficult time understanding his emotions and behaviours. He showed intense reactions towards staff members who later decided that it was unsafe for him to go out in the community or go out with his family.

Essentially, Dominic also received PRN medication and started isolating while also not working on the life skills his family worked so hard to build. He also had a hard time being around children and animals or in busy community areas with many sensory factors surrounding him. His family then decided that Dominic needed additional support in a temporary home where he could feel safe and supported.

How Meeting Our Clinicians Changed Everything

Our Unique Community Services team started supporting Dominic while in a temporary home. His carefully picked team worked hard and learned all about his history, behaviour, and ways of communication. They implemented various methods and techniques that allowed Dominic to build up his life skills, his communication skills and tolerance of others.

Dominic’s communication drastically improved, and he started learning about other people’s emotions and how to act when visiting busy community areas. Today, he loves going out daily, and he even learned how to cook, do his laundry and clean his home independently. Most importantly, he no longer requires PRN medication, and he can enjoy his favourite video games with his team of carers.

The Impact Of Our Support

Dominic worked continuously to rebuild his relationships with his family, and he is now enjoying everyday activities with them again. His motor skills drastically improved as his team of carers used Positive Behaviour Support and proactive strategies to support him in regaining his independence.

He enjoys playing card and board games, loves going to the park and feeding the ducks and can go out every day to places that he previously found were too sensory stimulating. The most significant impact of our dedicated work can be seen in the fact that Dominic enjoys his younger niece’s company but doesn’t need any physical intervention from his support team as they built strong and meaningful relationships with him.

The team of clinicians at Unique Community Services, as part of the Catalyst Group Foundation, is dedicated to improving healthcare. We see people for who they are and are guided by the importance of human rights, quality of care, empathy and compassion.
